The Emergence of Contrastive Palatalization in Russian

The well known contrast in Russian between palatalized and non-palatalized consonants originated roughly one thousand years ago. At that time consonants were allophonically palatalized before front vowels, as in danjZ 'tribute'. When the 'jer' (high, lax) vowels disappeared in certain positions, the palatalization formerly triggered by the front jer remained, leading to a palatalization contras...

A study of palatal segments' production by danish speakers

Most acoustical researches consider palatality through languages dominated by the palatalization process, like Russian. In this paper, we propose to apply acoustical analysis, adapted to the dynamical character of the palatal sounds to the Danish language, which is exempt from any palatalization process and has no palatal phonemes, except [j]. Phonetic alignment constraints: consonant overlap and palatalization in English and Russian

The possibility of di!erences in phonetic alignment of phonological segments was examined by contrasting consonant sequences at word boundaries in Russian and English. In Experiment 1, two acoustic measures of consonant overlap, percent released and duration ratio, are computed for stop sequences at word boundaries, and results for English and Russian are compared. While signi"cant variation du...

A model of rule inductio...

This was examined in two experiments with American English and Russian listeners. Results suggest that listeners' language does not influence auditory perception, but does affect the rated perceptual similarity of speech sounds.
